New ‘Transformers 4′ Trailer Blows Up Everything That Came Before

Transformers 4: Optimus Prime Paramount Pictures

“A new era has begun. The day of the Transformers is over.”

It’s not so much a reboot, this Transformers: Age of Extinction. It’s definitely the fourth film in a franchise closely watched by its shepherd Michael Bay. But in the first teaser and now this first full trailer, the minds of marketing at Paramount want fans to know that this time around is different. It’s darker, more serious, less Shia. It’s grown up and picked Pain & Gain star Mark Wahlberg as its very manly lead. It touts the fact that the rules have changed, the era of the Transformers is over. “We don’t need you,” explains newcomer Stanley Tucci to an off-screen robot.

And for a moment — two minutes, to be exact — it’s easy to believe them. Because this time around we get some giant dinosaur robots (Dinobots to their friends). Things may just be different, after all.

Though as wise man have said for many years, the more things change the more they stay the same. Nowhere is that more true than in the fourth Transformers movie’s trailer. You’ve got the eye-candy in Nicola Peltz, the hunky love interest in Jack Reynor, the glossy explody CGI landscapes of Michael Bay’s ever-external id, and you’ve got plenty of silly names. Seriously, Cade Yeager is Wahlberg’s character name? Cade Yeager?! In the immortal words of Andy Torres on Cougar Town, “C’mon!”

All of that said, if you’re into this sort of thing (and I am), it looks like a blast.

Transformers: Age of Extinction is due in theaters June 27, 2014.
