‘Blue Ruin’ Trailer: Revenge By the Seashore

blue-ruin-05

There are few things to watch that are as satisfying as a good old fashioned revenge story, and if the new trailerfor Jeremy Saulnier‘s Blue Ruin is any indication, we’ve got another excellent case of death-bringing on our hands.

The trailer begins with a man named Dwight (Macon Blair) awakened from his apparent home, a car resting on the coastline near the beach. He’s looking worse for the wear, as those living in their cars are wont to do. A kind police officer spells it out in soothing voiceover that he’s had his reasons for living his life in hiding. With that gentle rap on the car window, though, the officer is unleashing a whole new can of worms for Dwight to devour: the man who killed Dwight’s parents when he was a child has been released from prison. While the officer seems to think that this news will shock and terrify Dwight, it appears the opposite is going to happen.

This is a revenge flick, and Dwight is going to hit the road to track that son of a bitch down. “What he did to them was awful,” the officer coos about halfway through the trailer as images of Dwight’s childhood play, juxtaposed with blood-soaked rooms and gun barrels. Well, what Dwight’s about to do to him is probably going to be even worse. If the quiet, maybe too eerily mellow trailer is any indication of the film’s tone, then we’re in for something disturbing.

Our own Rob Hunter very positively reviewed the film at Fantastic Fest last year, calling it “simply devastating.” Quoth Hunter: “Writer/director Jeremy Saulnier is wise to trust not only his lead character and actor but also his audience. Plot details and motivations are never shoved in our direction like street corner pamphlets but are instead revealed only when necessary.”

Blue Ruin is in theaters and on VOD April 25th.

“Paddington” Teaser Trailer — Upcoming Family Film Based on Classic British Children’s Books, ‘The Paddington Bear’

source:   youtube.com

added: Tue, Mar 4th '14

Here's the teaser trailer for "Paddington," the British-produced family film starring the voice of Colin Firth as a young droopy hat-wearing Peruvian bear who has stowed away on a cargo ship to England, only to find himself stranded in London's busiest train station. It's Hugo meets The Terminal meets a small brown bear from Peru.

Based on the classic children's illustration books by English author Michael Bond, "Paddington" was produced by "Gravity" and "Harry Potter" producer David Heyman and directed by Paul King, who's probably best known for directing the zany British comedy series "The Mighty Boosh."

The cast also includes Nicole Kidman, Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Jim Broadbent, Peter Capaldi and Julie Walters -- although none of them, including Firth, are seen or heard in this first preview for the upcoming CG animated-slash-live action hybrid feature, which won't hit theaters until the end of the year (December 12th in the States, and November 26 in the UK).

synopsis:
From the beloved children's novels by Michael Bond and producer David Heyman (HARRY POTTER), PADDINGTON tells the story of the comic misadventures of a young Peruvian bear (voiced by Colin Firth) who travels to the city in search of a home. Finding himself lost and alone, he begins to realize that city life is not all he had imagined -- until he meets the kindly Brown family who read the label around his neck that says "Please look after this bear. Thank you," and offer him a temporary haven. It looks as though his luck has changed until this rarest of bears catches the eye of a museum taxidermist.

“Harmontown” Trailer — SXSW Documentary on ‘Community’ Creator Dan Harmon’s Popular Podcast Show

source:   sxsw.com, youtube.com

added: Mon, Mar 3rd '14

When acclaimed comedic writer/TV showrunner Dan Harmon was notoriously fired from his own NBC show "Community," he found himself with a lot of free time on his hands. He chose to fill that time by performing a weekly, recorded live podcast called Harmontown, which was essentially devised to vent his frustrations and anger -- and also to get outrageously drunk on a nightly basis.

In the new feature-length documentary, which will screen this weekend at SXSW, cameras follow the self-destructive comedian as he takes a year-long podcast tour across America. Also, both Harmon and his comic friends talk openly about his personal demons and jerky behavior, which likely contributed to his 2011 firing -- although, he was eventually rehired for Community's latest fifth season.

"Harmontown" makes its world premiere this Saturday at the Austin-based film festival. Watch the film's promo trailer, above.

synopsis:
HARMONTOWN is a documentary film starring TV writer and producer Dan Harmon (NBC's Community, Adult Swim's Rick and Morty) as he takes his popular podcast of the same name on a calamitous cross-country tour. Much more than a comedy-tour documentary, the film directed by Neil Berkeley uncovers Harmon's public persona to reveal his complex character and his equally complex personal relationships. The supporting cast includes Jeff B. Davis (Whose Line is it Anyway?), Erin McGathy (This Feels Terrible) and Spencer Crittenden. (via sxsw.com)

J.A. Bayona to Direct 'A Monster Calls' Before 'World War Z' Sequel

River Road Entertainment, Participant Media, Lionsgate International, and Focus Features have teamed to finance and distribute Apache's production of acclaimed filmmaker Juan Antonio Bayona's next film, A Monster Calls, based on the award-winning children's fantasy novel by Patrick Ness (the Chaos Walking trilogy), the companies announced today. The film will be produced by Belén Atienza (The Impossible, Pan's Labyrinth, The Orphanage) and is slated for a fall 2016 release. It will be distributed by Focus Features domestically, Universal Pictures International for its theatrical and home entertainment release in Spain and Lionsgate International throughout the rest of the world.

Bayona won Spain's equivalent of the Academy Award, The Goya, for his last film, The Impossible, which was distributed by Lionsgate's Summit label and grossed more than $180 million at the worldwide box office. The Impossible is the second highest-grossing film of all time in Spain.

A Monster Calls is a visually spectacular drama about a young boy who attempts to deal with his mother's illness and the bullying of his classmates by escaping into a fantastical world of monsters and fairy tales that deal with courage, loss and faith. Ness wrote the novel based on an original idea by the late Siobhan Dowd, and he and illustrator Jim Kay won Britain's prestigious Carnegie Medal and Greenaway Medal in 2012, presented to the year's best children's literature in the UK. Ness is adapting the screenplay from his novel. Executive Producers on the film are River Road's Bill Pohlad and Mitch Horwits, Participant's Jeff Skoll and Jonathan King, and Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Co-Chairman Patrick Wachsberger.

Here's what Juan Antonio Bayona had to say in a statement.

"It is an incredible privilege to bring Patrick Ness' exceptional book to the screen and I couldn't have imagined better partners joining me in this endeavor. After The Orphanage and The Impossible, A Monster Calls is the perfect final chapter in a trilogy centered on the extraordinary strength of the mother-child bond."

Lionsgate co-chairman Patrick Wachsberger had this to say in his statement.

"We're pleased to join with our friends at Participant, River Road and Focus Features in financing and distributing this cherished and compelling property that has already earned a tremendous following in the world of children's literature. We're delighted to reunite with the creative forces behind our worldwide hit The Impossible, and there is nobody better suited to creating the fantastical world of A Monster Calls than the visionary filmmaker Juan Antonio Bayona."

River Road Entertainment's Founder and CEO Bill Pohlad added the following statement.

"River Road has collaborated to great success with Participant, Lionsgate International and Focus Features on several films, and we look forward to uniting for this distinguished project, which is in line with our effort to support captivating storytelling and incredibly talented filmmakers, like Juan Antonio Bayona."

Participant's EVP of Production Jonathan King offered his own statement.

"All of us at Participant are thrilled to be in such good company for this deeply moving tale about the power of storytelling, which could not be more perfectly aligned with our mission."

Focus Features CEO Peter Schlessel had this to say about working with the director.

"Juan Antonio Bayona is a filmmaker whose storytelling skills and stunning visuals are truly distinctive. He captures emotional truths amidst fantastical and terrifying situations, making him the ideal director to bring this acclaimed novel to a wide audience. I am pleased to make this our first co-production as CEO of Focus Features."

The deal was negotiated by Participant Media COO Jeff Ivers, River Road's Mitch Horwits, Lionsgate's Patrick Wachsberger, and Focus Features' Juan Antonio Bayona with CAA. Bayona is represented by CAA.

“NOW: In the Wings on a World Stage” Trailer — Doc. on Kevin Spacey’s Theatre Production of Shakespeare’s Richard III

source:   kevinspacey.com, youtube.com

added: Thu, Feb 27th '14

Before receiving rave reviews for his role as a Machiavellian politician on Netflix's acclaimed political drama "House of Cards," Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey had similar success playing a very similar manipulative character on stage -- only it was written more than 400 years ago by a guy named Shakespeare (you may have heard of him).

For the last few years, Spacey has been working on "NOW: In the Wings on a World Stage," a self-produced, 90-minute documentary that chronicles his 2011-2012 theatre production of Shakespeare's Richard III. It was a 12-city worldwide staged tour directed by Sam Mendes, which reunited the director with the actor for the first-time since their Oscar-winning 1999 film "American Beauty."

"This film is an insider look back stage at the experience of being an actor in a company; going to rehearsal every day, beginning to create a role with your director, crew and fellow actors and spending a year together on the road in many different cultures and countries forming a company," Spacey writes on his website, on which pre-orders for the film is now available.

Directed by Spacey's former assistant Jeremy Whelehan, the documentary will be distributed online, via kevinspacey.com, while a limited theatrical release is set for this spring.

synopsis:
Kevin Spacey, Sam Mendes and the Bridge Project Company go on the road in NOW across 3 continents and over 200 performances, revealing some of the most intimate moments behind the scenes of their staging of Richard III. Witness Spacey’s revelatory interpretation of Richard III in each brief excerpts from the play. For those who have never seen Spacey on stage this is a rare opportunity. NOW chronicles the first collaboration between Spacey and Mendes since both won Oscars for their work on American Beauty.

The Voices was produced by Matthew Rhodes, Adi Shankar, Roy Lee and Spencer Silna. The film is presented by Lionsgate and 1984 Private Defense Contractors and is a Mandalay Vision, Studio Babelsberg and Vertigo Entertainment production.

The Voices is a genre-bending film which centers around Jerry, a lovable but disturbed factory worker who yearns for the attention of a woman in accounting. Director Marjane Satrapi had this to say about the acquisition in a brief statement.

"I am very excited and happy that Lionsgate is distributing my film. I know my baby is in great hands."

Producers Rhodes, Shankar added their own statement.

"We are really pleased to have made what's been called the ultimate WTF horror comedy at Sundance. With their impressive ability to champion such bold, genre bending pictures, we know Lionsgate is the perfect home for this film."

Bruce Wayne and Catwoman Cast in Fox’s ‘Gotham’

david mazouz and camren bicondova

Young Master Wayne and Selina Kyle, AKA Catwoman, have been chosen for Fox’s Batman prequel, Gotham.

David Mazouz will play the tragedy-stricken Bruce, shortly after the murder of his parents and now under the care of Alfred Pennyworth (Sean Pertwee). Mazouz is best known for his role in Fox’s short-lived, ASCAP Award-winning sci-fi series Touch alongside Keifer Sutherland and Danny Glover. That show managed two seasons before being cancelled.

Portraying pre-Catwoman Selina will be Camren Bicondova, a relative newcomer to Hollywood, whose major claim to fame is being a runner-up on MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew with her group, 8 Flavahs. She has also appeared in small roles in the horror flick Girlhouse and Cinedigm’s dance drama Battlefield America. Bicondova’s role as Selina will be as another orphaned teenager, well on her way to master thief as an expert pickpocket living on the streets of Gotham.

With the casting of both Mizouz and Bicondova, Fox has shored up its major casting duties, with all major players in this version of the DC Universe attached to names. Ben McKenzie (Southland, The O.C.) is Detective James Gordon, Jada Pinkett Smith is crime boss and nightclub owner Fish Mooney, Robin Lord picks up duties as pre-Penguin Oswald Cobblepot, Sarah Paxton (The Innkeepers, Shark Night 3D) will play Bette Kane, who will either become Batgirl or prospectively Flamebird, depending on how they work with canon. Sons of Anarchy and CBGB star Donal Logue will portray morally ambiguous detective Harvey Bullock, and UK actress Erin Richards rounds things out as Gordon’s fiancée, and prospectively future ex, Barbara Kean.

Gotham puts Jim Gordon center stage, telling his origin story, painting the picture that leads to Gordon becoming Batman’s most trusted man of the law in a corrupt Gotham PD. Along the way we’re introduced to the men and women who will eventually become Batman’s greatest foes. The WB pilot is being written and executive produced by Bruno Heller, best known for his writing/producing duties on HBO’s highly successful Rome, and CBS crime-drama The Mentalist.

Fox Entertainment president Kevin Reilly, when speaking of the upcoming series, said, ”This is not one of the things where you bought a franchise and then none of the characters people know. We will follow Bruce Wayne right up until the point where he gets interesting. It’s Gotham teetering on the edge. This is all of the classic Batman characters. This is the Batman franchise just backing it up. It gives a real focus as to what this show is about and what stories we’re telling.”

Gotham has no network drop date as of yet, but per the usual, we’ll keep you informed.

‘The Bag Man’ Review: Faux Prada, Fake Tarantino

Robert De Niro in THE BAG MAN Cinedigm

It’s been two decades since Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction crashed the zeitgeist and sent screenwriters everywhere rushing to their keyboards to create quirky criminals with the gift of gab. The best ones (In Bruges, Suicide Kings, Go) quickly form their own identity, but far too many seem content trying to mash together dark comedy and sharp violence and then calling it a day. Barely a month goes by without some new Tarantino-esque crime thriller hitting screens, and while it’s slowed down a bit recently the flow hasn’t stopped. Exhibit C for 2014… The Bag Man.

Jack (John Cusack) is hired by a crime boss named Dragna (Robert De Niro) to acquire a particular bag and then wait at a motel for pick-up and payoff. The most important part of the task? Do not, under any circumstances, look in the bag. Jack struggles to resist the urge, but the waiting game is complicated by a host of characters trying to sleep with him, kill him, or possibly both.

Writer/director David Grovic‘s debut is clearly inspired by the kinds of films mentioned above, but it feels more interested in duplicating a checklist than in creating its own unique world. Still, you can’t go too wrong with a movie that lets De Niro say a line like this:

“One day I was watching an episode of Full House where Jesse goes bungee-jumping with Becky. Changed my whole life.”

Jack gets shot while retrieving the bag, a sequence we don’t even get to see, and finds himself awash in “characters” as soon as he arrives at the motel. Ned (Crispin Glover) the motel clerk is wheelchair-bound and a bit too curious about Jack’s business, Rivka (Rebecca Da Costa) is a scantily-clad femme fatale on the run from the world’s two least believable pimps, and the two suit-wearing guys in the room next door sure seem suspiciously shifty too. The pair of rough and tumble flesh-dealers harassing Rivka include a tracksuit-wearing little person named Guano (Martin Klebba) and a bald black guy (Sticky Fingaz) with an eye patch. The two bear no resemblance to anyone who’s ever actually walked the earth in real life.

The entirety of the plot is Jack killing time and people while waiting for Dragna, and that’s perfectly fine. What’s less effective is the unreal feeling to it all. The characters feel forced into this sub-genre mold as if Grovic and co-writer Paul Conway used a random characteristic generator to flesh-out their creations and make them “cool” or memorable. It never feels authentic though, and instead of being in the range of the films above it feels more akin to something like Things to Do in Denver When You’re Dead… ringing false, but mildly entertaining all the same. The dialogue occasionally feels dreamlike and surreal too, and things get weird enough that had there been a third-act reveal that this was a sequel to Cusack’s own Identity I wouldn’t have been surprised.

Cusack is at an odd point in his career and has been for the past few years. He’s moved away from lead roles in wide releases but still nabs the occasional supporting one (The Butler, The Paperboy) and instead is in a race to star in as many limited release (or in most cases, straight to DVD) titles as possible. The Bag Man is the first of six films for him this year, and he had the same number in 2013. But how many can you name? Happily, while he sleepwalks through too many of those he at least appears to be having fun here. Just not as much fun as De Niro. Obviously.

The Bag Man both suffers and thrives on its oddball aspects, and while it makes for an easy watch it also makes for a forgettable one. Both Cusack and De Niro have starred in far worse limited-release fare recently, so this one rises towards the top by default, but fans of either actor are encouraged to give it a chance. Just, whatever you do, don’t look in the bag.

The Upside: Cusack makes an effort; some fun dialogue; never dull

The Downside: Da Costa’s acting; story wanders a bit too much; tries too hard to be quirky; lack of kickboxing by Cusack; at the 1:30:51 mark there’s the most glaringly obvious ADR work ever with the words “your fiance”

On the Side: The original title was Motel.

Writer-director Chris Eska's acclaimed Civil War-era drama, "The Retrieval," has won a handful of festival awards last year, including 2013 SXSW's Breakthrough Performance for Tishuan Scott, who stars as an ex-runaway slave-turned-Union gravedigger tricked into traveling back to the South by a young slave boy (Ashton Sanders) who is secretly working under the orders of a ruthless white bounty hunter (Bill Oberst Jr).

Check out their critically-lauded handiwork in the newly-released trailer for the slow-burning indie, which is hitting theaters this spring, on April 2nd.

'The Raid' Remake Confirms 'The Expendables 3' Director Patrick Hughes

Mar 4, 2014 by Brian Gallagher

Just weeks after we reported that The Expendables 3 director Patrick Hughes is in talks to direct The Raid, the filmmaker has been confirmed to take the helm of this English-language remake.

Brad Ingelsby (Out of the Furnace, Run All Night) is writing the screenplay, based on Gareth Evans' 2012 action epic The Raid: Redemption. The original, which starred Iko Uwais and Joe Taslim, followed a group of Jakarta cops who stage a raid on a 30-story building filled with deadly criminals.

While this new version is expected to have a similar story line, it isn't known where the story will take place. The Raid: Redemption also spawned the upcoming sequel The Raid 2, also directed by Gareth Evans, arriving in theaters March 28. Sony picked up the remake rights in November 2011, following The Raid: Redemption's world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

XYZ Films, which produced both The Raid: Redemption and The Raid 2, is behind the remake. No actors have been attached at this time, but with the director now confirmed, it should only be a matter of time before cast members start falling in place.

The Raid comes to theaters in 2014. The film is directed by Patrick Hughes.

S.P.E.C.T.R.E. Might Appear in 'Bond 24'

Mar 5, 2014 by Brian Gallagher

Screenwriter John Logan continues to tease the story of his highly-anticipated 007 adventure Bond 24, reiterating in a new interview that this movie continues the same themes that were introduced in Skyfall. While he wouldn't get into specifics, the writer also teased that S.P.E.C.T.R.E. may come into play, and that this follow-up might end up being a two-part movie after all.

Back in November, we reported that MGM won back the rights to Blofield and the evil S.P.E.C.T.R.E. organization, which lead many fans to speculate whether or not they will be included in this sequel. While the writer wouldn't confirm or deny that Blofield or S.P.E.C.T.R.E. will be featured in this story, he did talk about using the previous movies and Ian Fleming's novels as an inspiration.

"There might be (a presence of S.P.E.C.T.R.E.)! Honestly, not being evasive, but the great thing about Bond is that I have fifty years of movies - 23 movies and all the Ian Fleming novels and short stories, all of which are fodder. And when I'm working on the new Bond I'm constantly going back to Fleming and the other movies - what are the bits and pieces, what are the resonances? One of the things we learned in Skyfall is that the audience really enjoyed those, they enjoyed when they saw the Aston Martin, they enjoyed when we had references to things they grew up with, either from Ian Fleming or from the other movies, and that's always been a part of my thinking about Bond."

The writer revealed in a January interview that there is "resonance" from Skyfall in this new movie, which makes sense since Skyfall introduced a number of new characters who will be returning alongside Daniel Craig in Bond 24, such as Ralph Fiennes (M), Naomie Harris (Eve Moneypenny) and Ben Whishaw (Q). In a new interview with Empire, the screenwriter revealed that the first draft of the script is nearly complete.

"Right now the first draft is almost done. I'm terrifically excited about it! I've been working very closely with (director) Sam (Mendes), and it's been joyous to pick up from our work on Skyfall and just continue on with the storytelling. The new movie continues the themes of Skyfall. Some of the characters and themes that we began to introduce in Skyfall will play out, I hope successfully, in the next movie."

The writer also talked about how involved Daniel Craig is in the writing process.

"Daniel's very involved. It behoves no-one to write a character that the lead actor doesn't want to play, so having worked so closely on Skyfall, I have my own sense of what I think Dan responds to, as does Sam, (and producers) Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson of course."

He wouldn't comment on the return of Quantum, Blofield or any other 00 agents, but the writer was asked if Bond 24 would be a two-part film, a rumor which spring up in 2012 but was shot down by Daniel Craig.

"I'm just trying to get one done first! If I survive this one, we'll see about the next one! No comment."

He also confirmed a report from last month that shooting was set to begin in October, and spoke about how enjoyable it has been working on Skyfall and Bond 24.

"Working on Skyfall was the most enjoyable experience I've ever had on a movie, ever. And I've done a lot of movies! And this is shaping up in much the same way, because it's a loving, sensitive director who loves the material as much as I do, it's producers and a studio who believe entirely in the story we're telling and it's leading actors who are a joy to write for. Honestly, because I've been working on both Skyfall and the new Bond simultaneously it's been a really, exuberantly happy time in my life because what I'm actually writing currently brings me incredible joy. You ain't seen nothing yet!"

Bond 24 comes to theaters November 6th, 2015 and stars Ralph Fiennes, Daniel Craig, Naomie Harris, Ben Whishaw. The film is directed by Sam Mendes.

“Transformers: Age of Extinction” New Trailer — Michael Bay’s Highly-Anticipated Sequel starring Mark Wahlberg

source:   youtube.com

added: Tue, Mar 4th '14

Behold the new theatrical trailer for director Michael Bay's fourth installment of the sci-fi action franchise "Transformers: Age of Extinction," starring Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz, Jack Reynor, Kelsey Grammer and Stanley Tucci.

Set to open this summer, June 27th, this new preview offers a much better look at the film's story, which this time leaves out Shia Labeouf's character to focus on a father (Wahlberg) who stumbles on a broken-down mac truck that turns out to be Optimus Prime. Which in many ways sets the wheels in motion as a new intergalactic robot war emerges, proving government officials are wrong when they declare "the age of the Transformers is over." Clearly, it's not.

New ‘Transformers 4′ Trailer Blows Up Everything That Came Before

Transformers 4: Optimus Prime Paramount Pictures

“A new era has begun. The day of the Transformers is over.”

It’s not so much a reboot, this Transformers: Age of Extinction. It’s definitely the fourth film in a franchise closely watched by its shepherd Michael Bay. But in the first teaser and now this first full trailer, the minds of marketing at Paramount want fans to know that this time around is different. It’s darker, more serious, less Shia. It’s grown up and picked Pain & Gain star Mark Wahlberg as its very manly lead. It touts the fact that the rules have changed, the era of the Transformers is over. “We don’t need you,” explains newcomer Stanley Tucci to an off-screen robot.

And for a moment — two minutes, to be exact — it’s easy to believe them. Because this time around we get some giant dinosaur robots (Dinobots to their friends). Things may just be different, after all.

Though as wise man have said for many years, the more things change the more they stay the same. Nowhere is that more true than in the fourth Transformers movie’s trailer. You’ve got the eye-candy in Nicola Peltz, the hunky love interest in Jack Reynor, the glossy explody CGI landscapes of Michael Bay’s ever-external id, and you’ve got plenty of silly names. Seriously, Cade Yeager is Wahlberg’s character name? Cade Yeager?! In the immortal words of Andy Torres on Cougar Town, “C’mon!”

All of that said, if you’re into this sort of thing (and I am), it looks like a blast.

Transformers: Age of Extinction is due in theaters June 27, 2014.

“Annie” Trailer — Upcoming Musical Remake starring Quvenzhane Wallis and Jamie Foxx

source:   facebook.com, youtube.com

added: Wed, Mar 5th '14

It's a hard knock life for ten-year-old wunderkind Quvenzhane Wallis. And no, we're not talking about her Oscar-nominated performance in 2012's "Beasts of the Southern Wild," but her latest starring role in the updated feature version of the classic Broadway musical "Annie." And you can now get a peek at Wallis as the titular orphan girl in the debut trailer for the heartfelt redo that also stars Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz, Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale.

Produced by Will Smith and directed by Will Gluck (Easy A, Friends with Benefits), the upcoming film sees Foxx as a variation of the Daddy Warbucks character, named Will Stacks. He's a wealthy New York mayoral candidate who opens up his luxurious home to Annie, after a chance encounter. And while his generosity is a calculated attempt to get in the good graces of the voters, slowly and surely his frigid heart starts to warm up -- perhaps to a point where he actually sees himself as her possible legal guardian. Well, that's until her real parents are found.

The sun will come out tomorrow. However, "Annie" won't come out until December 19th.

synopsis:
Academy Award-nominee Quvenzhane Wallis stars as Annie, a young, happy foster kid who’s also tough enough to make her way on the streets of New York in 2014. Originally left by her parents as a baby with the promise that they'd be back for her someday, it’s been a hard knock life ever since with her mean foster mom Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz). But everything's about to change when the hard-nosed tycoon and New York mayoral candidate Will Stacks (Jamie Foxx) -- advised by his brilliant VP, Grace (Rose Byrne) and his shrewd and scheming campaign advisor, Guy (Bobby Cannavale) -- makes a thinly-veiled campaign move and takes her in. Stacks believes he's her guardian angel, but Annie's self-assured nature and bright, sun-will-come-out-tomorrow outlook on life just might mean it's the other way around.

directed by   Will Gluck

starring   Quvenzhane Wallis, Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz, Rose Byrne, Bobby Cannavale

“The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ Featurette (‘Gwen and Peter’) — starring Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield

The upcoming sequel to director Marc Webb's "Spider-Man" franchise is not all about Spidey's herculean quest to shut down Oscorp Industries and the villains they spawned. No-no-no. Leave it to the director of "500 Days of Summer" to make sure there's still room for some romantic suspense.

The new featurette for "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" examines a lover's quarrel subplot concerning Emma Stone's Gwen Stacy and Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker. It seems Gwen is still struggling with the idea of dating a person who's essentially living two lives -- one being the life of a superhero who always appears busy with "doing whatever it is he does." So, when Gwen is given the opportunity to go to school in London on an Oxford scholarship -- well, she must figure out if her relationship with Peter is really worth saving.

Will Spidey have his heart broken? Will Gwen really leave New York for England? How the hell does The Rhino fit in this damn story? All our questions will hopefully be answered when "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" crawls into theaters on May 2.

synopsis:
It's great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there's no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.

directed by   Marc Webb

starring   Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Paul Giamatti, Dane DeHaan, Felicity Jones, Chris Cooper, Sally Field, Campbell Scott, Embeth Davidtz, Colm Feore

The 9 Must See Movies of March 2014

Grand Budapest Hotel

March may not be the most wonderful time of the year, but this year it’s a pretty wonderful 31-day span. There’s a Wes Anderson movie, Muppets, a biblical epic, and the return of one of TV’s most charming characters. This month is overwhelming with quality, so much so that I had to exclude Eva Green’s performance in 300: Rise of an Empire from this list. Not only is that semi-sequel more fun, self-aware, and bonkers than the original, but Green chews up every bit of CG scenery in her sight. I already feel shame for scratching it off.

Make sure to experience Green’s performance in 3D. Never before has a woman kissing a decapitated head been portrayed with such grace, but somehow Green and the power of a third dimension makes the romantic act more beautiful and visceral than ever.

None of the 10 films featured below has the actress killing it in the third dimension, but they all have their own things going for them. Again, it’s an excellent month to look forward to.

Opens in theaters March 7th

Wes Anderson’s new film, set in the fictionalized Republic of Zubrowka, is a total blast. Not only because of Anderson’s breathless script and direction, but also due to a helluva a cast, namely Ralph Fiennes playing the hotel concierge on the run, Monsieur Gustave H. In the film Gustave is loved by all, and nobody in the audience will doubt why that is after they see Gustave in action. Fiennes is charming, cunning, and hilarious in this 1920s crime film.

dashes

Opens in theaters March 14th

It would be best for all of us if Denis Villeneuve and Jake Gyllenhaal continued their partnership. In Enemy, Gyllenhaal follows up Prisoners with an exciting performance that’ll stick with you. Gyllenhaal plays a professor who finds a copy of himself, an actor that shouldn’t be trusted from frame one. What follows that discovery is a tense, fully-realized vision crafted with precision by Villeneuve. Not once does the film have you marveling at the trickery behind the two Gyllenhaals, but rather has you transfixed by this nightmarish vision from start to finish.

dashes

Opens in theaters March 14th

The return of Veronica Mars always felt like more of a dream than a reality. Never say never, though, since Rob Thomas‘s beloved character finally got her own movie. Will non-Veronica Mars fans show up to watch the young detective (Kristen Bell) in theaters? Likely not, but who cares? This Kickstarted project, which you could’ve paid a measly $2,5000 to work on as an extra, is clearly a movie made by fans for fans. The trailers don’t show much promise, but Mars is a character that could easily provide 2 hours worth of entertainment.

dashes

Opens in theaters March 14th

Andrew Dodge‘s quick-witted script went on to become an impressive directorial debut from actor Jason Bateman. Bateman also stars in his film, a 40-year-old man who finds a loophole to participate in the National Spelling Bee Contest. It’s a dark comedy that finds the right balance between cruelty and humanity, to the point where Bateman’s empathy for his lead almost makes you root for the genius manchild to win at the end. Win or lose, he’s still a character you fall in love with.

Opens in theaters March 21st

James Bobin‘s The Muppets was a major surprise in 2011. The reboot showed that none of Jim Henson‘s characters had lost their magic, thanks to screenwriters Nicholas Stoller and Jason Segal. What Stoller, Segal, and Bobin crafted was pure delight, in every way imaginable. Even the human characters were a joy to watch. With the actors they’ve brought in for the sequel, including Ricky Gervais and Tina Fey, we should expect the similar results with Bobin’s sequel.

Terry Gilliam's 'The Zero Theorem' Gets Late Summer Release

Mar 5, 2014 by Brian Gallagher

Amplify and Well Go USA Entertainment have teamed up to acquire the U.S. rights to acclaimed director Terry Gilliam's science-fiction opus, The Zero Theorem. The partners will release the film to theaters across the US in late summer, with a home video release to follow. Amplify will handle theatrical and digital distribution rights, with Well Go USA releasing the film on DVD and Blu-ray.

Directed by Gilliam (Brazil, 12 Monkeys, Monty Python and The Holy Grail), The Zero Theorem stars two-time Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained, Inglourious Basterds) as Qohen Leth, an eccentric and reclusive computer genius plagued with existential angst. Living in isolation in a burnt-out church, Qohen is obsessively working on a mysterious project personally delegated to him by Management (Matt Damon) aimed at discovering the meaning of life - or the lack thereof - once and for all. Increasingly disturbed by unwanted visits from people he doesn't fully trust, including the flirtatious Bainsley (Mélanie Thierry), Management's wunderkind son Bob (Lucas Hedges), his unpredictable colleague Joby (David Thewlis), and would-be digital therapist Dr. Shrink-Rom (Tilda Swinton), it's only when he experiences the power of love and desire that he's able to understand his own reason for being.

Here's what Amplify's Kent Sanderson had to say in a statement.

"For all of us at Amplify and Well Go, it's an absolute dream to have the chance to work with a visionary like Terry. As someone who wore out a VHS of Brazil and saw 12 Monkeys in theaters three times, I can say on the whole team's behalf that we're incredibly excited to share his new take on society gone awry with the widest possible audience."

Director Terry Gilliam had this to say in his statement.

"The Zero Theorem is a very unique film that I'm especially proud of, so it is a relief to be distributed by a company that is not afraid to push the boundaries."

The Zero Theorem was directed by Terry Gilliam from a script by Pat Rushin, and produced by Academy Award winner Nicolas Chartier and Dean Zanuck. The deal was orchestrated by Elisabeth Costa de Beauregard Rose of Voltage Pictures on behalf of the filmmakers, Sanderson, Dylan Marchetti, and Logan Mulvey on behalf of Amplify and Doris Pfardrescher on behalf of Well Go USA.

The Zero Theorem comes to theaters in 2014 and stars Christoph Waltz, Mélanie Thierry, David Thewlis, Lucas Hedges, Matt Damon, Ben Whishaw, Tilda Swinton, Sanjeev Bhaskar. The film is directed by Terry Gilliam.

“The Double” New Full Trailer — Director Richard Ayoade’s Doppelganger Flick starring Jesse Eisenberg

Jesse Eisenberg is a "creepy guy" who gets creeped out by a doppelganger in the new domestic trailer for "Submarine" director Richard Ayoade's hyper-stylized comedic nightmare "The Double." "The Social Network" star performs dual roles as the introverted Simon and the outgoing James: two office clerks who are not related but look exactly alike, complete with the same identical frumpy suit that resembles something David Byrne would've donned in a Talking Heads music video.

And while their co-workers aren't able to notice their striking physical similarities, Simon certainly doesn't consider the sudden appearance of James as a happy accident. Especially since James seems to be dead-set on charming his way into Simon's life -- perhaps with the evil intention of taking it over and pushing him out, but not before Simon gets to see his would-be girlfriend (Mia Wasikowska) stolen from under his fingertips. Ah man, creepy guys never win the girl.

"The Double" opens on iTunes/VOD and in theaters on May 9th.

synopsis:
Simon (Jesse Eisenberg) is a timid man, scratching out an isolated existence in an indifferent world. He is overlooked at work, scorned by his mother, and ignored by the woman of his dreams. He feels powerless to change any of these things. The arrival of a new co-worker, James, serves to upset the balance. James is both Simon's exact physical double and his opposite - confident, charismatic and good with women. To Simon's horror, James slowly starts taking over his life.

directed by   Richard Ayoade

starring   Jesse Eisenberg, Mia Wasikowska, Wallace Shawn, Noah Taylor, Yasmin Paige, James Fox, Cathy Moriarty, Craig Roberts, Paddy Considine, Chris O'Dowd, Sally Hawkins

“Oculus” Full-Length Trailer — Horror Thriller starring Karen Gillan, Katee Sackhoff, Brenton Thwaites and Rory Cochrane

Before "Doctor Who" star Karen Gillan gets blasted into space in Marvel's upcoming comic-book flick "Guardians of the Galaxy," she will have to first deal with some Earthbound obstacles, for instance destroying a really spooky mirror in the new horror thriller "Oculus."

Gillan stars opposite Brenton Thwaites (the upcoming Maleficent and The Giver) as two emotionally-troubled siblings whose parents were mysteriously killed years ago. Though the cause of their deaths may have something to do with a centuries-old mirror, which Gillan's character believes is cursed with some extremely bad mojo. The solution? Kill it before it kills again.

Co-written and helmed by horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan (Absentia), the film also stars Battlestar Galactica's Katee Sackhoff and Dazed and Confused's Rory Cochrane as the murdered parents while Annalise Basso and Garrett Ryan play the younger versions of Gillan and Thwaites' characters.

"Oculus" is coming to theaters next month, April 11th.

synopsis:
Ten years ago, tragedy struck the Russell family, leaving the lives of teenage siblings Tim and Kaylie forever changed when Tim was convicted of the brutal murder of their parents. ‘Paddington’ Teaser: Tearing Down Britain’s Infrastructure, One Bear at a Time

paddington_poster

“If you see something, say something.” It’s a simple rule. Unattended packages are a matter for the authorities — they could be stuffed full of explosives, chemical weaponry, or even vicious Peruvian wildlife intent on draining Great Britain’s marmalade reserves dry.

Yet the first teaser for Paddington flies in the face of public transportation’s basic safety procedures. There’s London’s Paddington Railway Station, and right smack in the middle of the platform is an unattended package. One large enough to comfortably fit an adorable stuffed bear. Clearly, multiple passersby must have seen something. Yet not a single one said something. Shameful.

Paddington is a cautionary tale of Britain’s undocumented immigrant bears, and the damage they’ve been doing to the nation’s economy. Or, if the film’s synopsis can be believed, it’s the tale of a wayward stuffed bear who’s taken in by a kind family, all while being stalked by an evil taxidermist (Nicole Kidman). Presumably, she’s after the secret of how a stuffed animal can walk and talk and consume so much marmalade without being beset upon by ants.

There’s not much footage to be found in this first Paddington clip (it is a teaser, after all), but those who grew up with Paddington Bear are probably wondering two things: what the movie’s CGI Paddington will look like, and what his Colin Firth-provided voice will sound like. They get the first one, kinda. The trailer ends with a peek at the be-hatted bear, and he’s looking far more like a real bear cub than a stuffed toy. Will Paddington be going some kind of Pinocchio-esque “stuffed bear becomes real bear” route? For the sake of the children (who should probably be exposed to as few realistic bear maulings as possible), I hope not.

Now we just have to wait a little longer to hear what Paddington Firth sounds like. Probably a lot like Colin Firth, if I had to guess. You don’t hire Britain’s #1 non-threatening male actor just to downplay his non-threatening Britishness.

Watch the trailer for Paddington below (thanks to Yahoo! Movies).

Paddington hits theaters on December 12, 2014.

Indie filmmaking vet Larry Fessenden has carved out a respectable career, writing and directing such slow-burning, atmospheric horror films as Habit, Wendigo, and The Last Winter. His latest effort, however, demonstrates the filmmaker's willingness to camp things up if need be.

"Beneath," which was initially produced and aired on Chiller TV late last year, is the director's take on low-budget creature features that center on clueless teens who are picked off one by one by an unknown monster. In this case, it's a "giant flesh-eating fish" that gets provoked when a small row boat filled with young careless partygoers enters in its vicinity.

Shout Factory is releasing the film on Blu-Ray and DVD this month, March 25. They also recently released the film's Blu-Ray trailer, above.

synopsis:
When a group of young friends commemorating their high school graduation take a trip to the remote Black Lake, their celebration turns into a nightmare. Trapped in a leaking boat with no oars, the teens face the ultimate test of friendship and sacrifice during a terror-stricken fight for survival when they find something is living beneath the surface.

starring   Daniel Zovatto, Bonnie Dennison, Chris Conroy, Mark Margolis

What Should Have Won Best Picture For the Past 30 Years

2014 Academy Award Best Picture Nominees Cartoon

After all the handwringing and concern, this year’s Oscars were reasonably even-handed. After all, the directors for Adaptation, Shame and Children of Men all got to make acceptance speeches — and they got to give them while representing incredibly strong pieces of cinema, standing alongside some stridently beloved performers. The next morning, there was a general perception that the whole program had been “fair” after a few years where the politicking (and its results) were too overt, where decent had replaced outstanding, where ossification had set in. The Academy had finally gotten it right. Whatever that means.

The thing is, to think of any given stack of Oscar ballots as being wrong is both faulty and perfectly natural. We do it every year with gusto even knowing that — for all the pomp and ceremony — the Academy Awards aren’t a final or definitive word on quality. They’re one group’s opinions, but they feel like something more. Something that has the power to solidify cultural merit or spark an artistic legacy. It’s why the digital pitchforks come out for “snubs.”

With that in mind, Scott Beggs, Rob Hunter and Landon Palmer got together to argue what movies should have had their names etched in Oscar history, to do a calculation on Academy accuracy — admittedly with the benefit of clear-eyed hindsight and correct opinions. That didn’t make some years easier or anything. Some bad picks were obvious, but most years led to a lot of verbal fisticuffs.

Still, we managed to come out with one shining example of cinema for every year from 1983 through 2012.

What won? Terms of Endearment

Emma (Debra Winger) and her mother Aurora (Shirley MacLaine) don’t exactly get along, but as the years pass and the two women grow older they discover their differences pale beside their love. If alien invaders ever worm their way into our society this film and its ability to identify those with or without human hearts might be our only line of defense.

It’s a beautifully acted and written adult drama that will wring every last ounce of fluid from your tear ducts, but the genius of it is that it never feels manipulative. Instead, writer/director James L. Brooks and his immensely talented cast deliver an authentic glimpse into the lives of people that we come to know and care about.  – Rob Hunter

What won? Amadeus

Not exactly a year bursting with prestige, it did far better on the populist front. Somewhere in the middle of that Venn diagram, lost backstage, is the mockumentary brilliance of Christopher Guest‘s career blueprint. On the surface, it’s hilarious and endlessly quotable, but beneath all that it’s a cringing exploration of fame and self-delusion. Mostly self-delusion. Not only is it a success at making us laugh, it uses three long-haired court jesters (in perfect, empty-brained performances) to seek out human traits that are rarely explored in film. Naturally, its profundity holds hands with songs like “Lick My Love Pump.” – Scott Beggs

Brazil’s troubled production history is proof enough of the importance of recognizing risk-taking filmmaking in the face of an increasingly risk-averse studio system, but in this case, the controversy ultimately mimicked the film itself. What begins as a manic, inventive depiction of bureaucratic chaos quickly morphs into a no-holds-barred portrayal of systems of dystopic control that implement the method behind the madness. “1984? as imagined by Salvador Dali, Terry Gilliam’s film was never meant to be a cautionary tale, but a funhouse mirror that forces a consideration of the baby-masked forces that limit the possibilities for a better future. – Landon Palmer

What won? Platoon

Without a single insincere note, this story about a group of four friends, a dead body and a road trip without a car treats youth (and all of its complexity) with raw honesty. It also refuses to condescend to its pubescent heroes even as it reveals their flaws. Of course, they’re our flaws as well, or at least the flaws we owned before we tested for a driver’s license. And maybe a few we held onto.

Rob Reiner‘s film also combines all the best and most familiar elements of Stephen King’s writing — classic rock ‘n’ roll, friendship, morbid fascination, bullies, transformation and the power of a good story. Oddly enough, it’s also easy to forget that it’s a direct meditation on death and loss with the journey to see an ex-person bookended by an adult Gordie learning about Chris’ violent end. Devoid of white noise and urgency, it plays out exactly like a favorite memory should. – SB

What won? The Last Emperor

A network news producer (Holly Hunter) finds herself lost in a love triangle of sorts with an anchorman (William Hurt) and a field reporter (Albert Brooks), but her biggest challenge is her struggle to remain true to herself. James L. Brooks‘ greatest film is also my favorite movie of all time. Every frame, word, and performance is perfection with the lead actors in particular playing at the top of their game. The story remains a sharply insightful and sadly predictive look at the cheapening of our media and televised journalism, and its ability to balance that intelligence with incredible wit and an awkwardly realistic adult romance is a feat rarely matched in or out of Hollywood. It’s an honest film that finds value in every emotion, for better or worse, that combine to make us who we are. – RH

The Thin Blue Line Movie

Was it nominated? No (not even for Best Doc)

What won? Rain Man

Excluded from consideration for Best Documentary Feature because AMPAS members saw its reenactments, pointed advocacy, and deliberate reveal of information as unbefitting non-fiction filmmaking, The Thin Blue Line has probably influenced documentary filmmaking more than any single film of the past quarter century. Errol Morris not only makes an art of reality (complete with a hypnotizing score by Philip Glass), but in doing so inaugurated his career-long fascination with exploring the nature of how we come to know and understand what it is we think we know and understand. By exploring the ways that we make reality of fictions, The Thin Blue Line took non-fiction to a new level. – LP

What won? Driving Miss Daisy (Yup, seriously.)

Has there been another film about contemporary American race relations quite like this? Spike Lee’s magnum opus captured a moment somewhere between the Civil Rights era and a gentrified Brooklyn and, in the context of a 1980s NYPD culture that regularly brutalized black Americans, urged a conversation about what we talk about when we talk about difference. Its huge cast of characters, its regional specificity, its hip-hop soundtrack, and its pained search for justice make Do the Right Thing a quintessential American film. It serves as a necessary reminder of what sugar-coated films purportedly “about race” rarely dare to say about race. – LP

What won? Dances With Wolves

In an alternative universe, Martin Scorsese would have won his Best Director statue 26 years earlier than he did, and his angry film about organized crime would have scored Best Picture. (To be clear: I think Dances With Wolves is a great movie, and that backlash against it is mainly motivated by its undeserved win instead of genuine dislike.)

Goodfellas evoked the filmmaking of the 1970s — both as a concise resculpting of The Godfather and as an exhibition of Scorsese’s energy — while taking advantage of the technology and access at the director’s finger tips in the 90s. It’s one of the last times that Robert De Niro fully owned a role (Cape Fear 1992 is arguably on the list, too), but it was the freedom to improvise on set that led Joe Pesci to steal scenes like a hair gelled Jesse James and earn an Oscar of his own. It’s an epic tale of having a dream, pursuing it, achieving it, and then watching it eat away at your soul. – SB

Silence of the Lambs

What won? The Silence of the Lambs

Jonathan Demme‘s crime thriller is a dominating movie. It sticks to your ribs like curdled milk that you’re happy to drink a second glass of. No wonder it won all of the big five Oscars and continues to be studied and re-analyzed year in and year out. More than just fame, this is a movie that’s reached icon status.

Jodie Foster‘s Clarice Starling is a fantastic character constructed from familiar noir tropes without relying on them. Her performance anchors the insanity — truly, insanity — floating around her and the case. More than that, it’s rare for a film to feature two iconic villains, but Buffalo Bill with his kidnapping, skinning and front-tucking stands out even as Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) eclipses the sun. It’s as perfect a procedural as we’re likely ever to see. – SB

What won? Unforgiven

James Foley is the reason that all other Mamet films feel…well, “less than.” Foley meets Mamet’s precise sense for rhythmic dialogue with impeccable staging and perfect camerawork, a stunning realization of stage material for the medium of film. Mamet’s expressive portrayal of winner-take-all economics already speaks well beyond the era of Reagan and Friedman, but the real gift of Foley’s Glengarry Glen Ross is in watching great actors deliver the meatiest of material. A gold standard for screen performance as well as adaptation, it is an eternal reminder that a few people and some words don’t only make for great theater. – LP

“Beneath The Harvest Sky” Trailer — Acclaimed Indie Drama starring Emory Cohen, Callan McAuliffe and Aidan Gillen

source:   tribecafilm.com, trailers.apple.com, youtube.com

added: Tue, Mar 4th '14

Inner-city kids aren't the only ones affected by lost dreams and drug-related crimes. It's something that husband-and-wife filmmaking team Aron Gaudet and Gita Pullapilly know all too well, as evident in the theatrical trailer for their indie drama "Beneath The Harvest Sky." Using their roots as documentary filmmakers, the duo wrote and directed their first ever narrative feature that takes an uncompromising, bleak snapshot of small-town life.

Set in a small border town in northern Maine, the critically-acclaimed indie follows two aimless teenagers: the trouble-making Casper (played by "The Place Beyond the Pines" star Emory Cohen) and the level-headed Dominic (Great Gatsby's Callan McAuliffe). Both feeling trapped in their soul-crushing, potato-farming community, the two friends plan a future farewell trip to Boston. Those plans, however, are put on hold when Casper starts to get involved in his father's illegal prescription drug business, which ultimately leads into a situation where their friendship is tested to its limits.

"Game of Thrones" star Aidan Gillen plays Casper's two-bit drug-dealing father. While Zoe Levin, Sarah Sutherland, David Denman, Timm Sharp and Michael McGrady round out the cast.

"Beneath The Harvest Sky," which premiered at TIFF last year, will be available on iTunes/VOD starting next month on April 15th and will also open in theaters on May 2nd.

synopsis:
Casper (Emory Cohen) and Dominic (Callan McAuliffe) have been fiercely loyal friends since childhood. Desperate for a way out of their quiet town on the Maine-Canada border, the boys make a pact to pool their earnings on a car and hit the road. But when Casper is drawn into drug smuggling with his outlaw father (Aidan Gillen) to pay his share, their friendship is pushed to the brink and adult choices forced on them all too soon.

'Divergent': IMAX FanFix Poster and New Clip

Mar 5, 2014 by Brian Gallagher

Jeanine Matthews (Kate Winslet) breaks down why Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) and her kind are so dangerous in the latest clip from Divergent, arriving in theaters March 21. Director Neil Burger's adaptation of Veronica Roth's novel is set in a society where citizens must devote their lives to one of five factions, although there are some like Tris who are known as divergents, those who don't fit into any of these groups. In addition to this new scene, IMAX has also released their new FanFix poster, designed by artist Victo Ngai, which will be given to fans who attend the first IMAX screenings of Divergent on Thursday, March 20. Take a look at the clip and one-sheet, then read the official press release for more details. Divergent IMAX Poster

Exclusively for IMAX fans as part of the IMAX FanFix program, those attending the first shows of Summit Entertainment's Divergent on Thursday, March 20, will receive a limited edition Divergent print featuring original artwork by award-winning artist and illustrator, Victo Ngai.

Ngai may be new to the IMAX FanFix roster, but she is no stranger to the spotlight. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Village Voice, WIRED, and many more. She was also recently named to the 2014 Forbes 30 Under 30: Art & Style.

In commenting on the inspiration behind the artwork, Ngai had this to say.

"I wanted to capture the scene of Tris and Four jumping off a moving train as it not only represents the courage required to become a Dauntless, it also symbolized the leap from their old faction and life, a decision they cannot go back on."
The origins are simple: reward the most avid IMAX fans with limited edition, collectible prints for select films. IMAX, together with our studio partners, engages some of the most celebrated and up-and-coming artists to create unique art that is exclusively for IMAX moviegoers. We will be offering these prints at the earliest IMAX showings to reward those who see it first!

“A Touch of Sin” International Trailer — Acclaimed Chinese Drama from Maverick Filmmaker Jia Zhangke

source:   youtube.com

added: Thu, Feb 27th '14

Despite landing on a couple of critics' top-ten lists last year, "A Touch of Sin," Chinese filmmaker Jia Zhangke's ultra-violent, highly-stylized, cinematic interpretation of contemporary China's newfound capitalism and materialism, pretty much went unnoticed when it opened in the States last October. Though a lack of interest may have been due in part to a weak US marketing campaign -- something that the UK distributor is clearly rectifying as they just released a gripping new international trailer that will surely captivate viewers, even those who don't consider themselves as foreign-arthouse enthusiasts.

Loosely based on four separate Chinese news articles concerning a disgruntled coal miner, a trigger-happy motorcyclist, a scorned receptionist and a fired factory worker, "A Touch of Sin" loosely links these vignettes as a way to dramatized the self-destructive side of China's new, modernized society spawned by the country's recent economic boom.

Though slated to open in the UK on May 16th, American moviegoers will have another chance to catch "A Touch of Sin" when it arrives on Blu-Ray and DVD on April 8th.

synopsis:
An angry miner revolts against the corruption of his village leaders. A migrant worker at home for the New Year discovers the infinite possibilities a firearm can offer. A pretty receptionist at a sauna is pushed to the limit when a rich client assaults her. A young factory worker goes from job to job trying to improve his lot in life.

Four people, four different provinces. A reflection on contemporary China: that of an economic giant slowly being eroded by violence.

starring   Zhao Tao, Jiang Wu, Wang Baoqiang, Luo Lanshan

‘Divergent’ Book Author Veronica Roth Reviews ‘Divergent’ Film

DIVERGENT

Sure, P.L. Travers might be the most publicly known disaffected author (at least as it applies to the full-scale cinematic and, on her end, utterly despised imagining of her beloved “Mary Poppins” by Walt Disney — what, did you miss Saving Mr. Banks?), but she’s far from the only one. Stephen King is notoriously not a fan of The Shining, Anthony Burgess so disliked the movie version of his A Clockwork Orange that he regretted writing his own book, Bret Easton Ellis almost roundly dismisses movie takes on his novels, and the list goes on and on (we’re betting that Mark Helprin isn’t too excited about the recent spin on Winter’s Tale), but it doesn’t always have to be the case. In fact, it’s sort of fun when it’s not.

The YA genre has been mostly lucky when it comes to author-approved movies – at least when it comes to its most popular and recent ones – as massive franchises like Harry Potter, Twilight, and The Hunger Games have been generally pleasing to their respective writers (at least, pleasing enough to not warrant public outcry). Now it seems that the YA love train can add another car to its huffing and puffing movement, as Veronica Roth, author of the “Divergent” trilogy, recently shared her thoughts on seeing the Shailene Woodley-starring Divergent with her fans (hint: she loved it).

Roth took to her Tumblr to share her experience in seeing the Neil Burger-directed film (the first of planned trilogy launched by Summit Entertainment, also home to the Twilight series) in Los Angeles a few weeks ago.

So what did Roth like? And what can we learn about the film, due to hit theaters later this month?

1. It made her remember her writing process.

Sure, this sounds pretty basic – this movie that is based on a book I wrote made me think about the book I wrote – but it’s also a damn good thing. Remember the last time you saw a film based on a book you loved that didn’t look anything like the book? Now imagine how that must have felt to the book’s author. Yow.

Roth shares, “as I was watching, I would flash back to this image of myself in pajama pants with really gross hair typing away on my computer, and then juxtapose it over the gorgeous shot of the Sears Tower or Navy Pier or the Abnegation sector on this big screen in front of me, and it was so ridiculously awesome and surreal I just wanted to laugh and cry all at once.”

2. She loved it.

Roth writes, “I loved it.” That’s to the point.

3. Even she was utterly absorbed by it.

The author shares, “I was completely absorbed by it.” Okay, okay, here’s more: “Even though I am so familiar with this story, I clearly remember grabbing the arms of my chair when Tris runs to catch the train after the Choosing Ceremony because I was nervous that she wouldn’t make it. (And then I thought to myself…YOU WROTE THE STORY, VERONICA.)”

4. Chicago looks good.

Roth says, “It was beautifully shot—Chicago is such a gorgeous city, and to see it transformed into this futuristic wasteland was incredibly cool—and suspenseful, and the cast did a wonderful job.”

5. Woodley and co-star Theo James are the definitive Tris and Four.

Although Roth declines to start calling out everyone in the cast, she does write, “I feel like I should say that Shailene Woodley as Tris and Theo James as Four are everything I hoped for (or maybe more than I dared to hope for).” Cool your jets, fans.

6. Burger approached the book with care and respect.

“And we were so lucky to have Neil Burger driving this—his vision of the world, the amazing details and subtleties of it, his understanding of the story, and how seriously he took every part of it…I mean, you can tell. You can see it everywhere.” Too bad Burger won’t be back for the next two films, but let’s just enjoy him while we have him.

7. Bonus: Roth likes Milk Duds.

She just seems like good people.

Divergent opens on March 21st.
